“Foreshadows of Better Things”
“…as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.”
John 3:1
Many years ago a beautiful stained-glass window was installed in one of the chapels of Oxford University in England. The window was a unique window. The exterior was decorated with mosaic inlays of glass depicting Old Testament stories, while the interior showed corresponding scenes from the New Testament.
When the sunlight shone on it, the two scenes would blend. Any observer standing inside the chapel would behold a soft light falling on the picture of Abraham, preparing to sacrifice his son, Isaac, on Mount Mariah, and at the same time he would see the cross of Calvary, which interprets that Old Testament type.
Viewing the same window from another angle, one would see the brazen serpent on a pole in the wilderness, and it’s great anti-type, the Savior hanging on the accursed tree as a sacrifice for sin.
This unusual window beautifully illustrates the vital connection between the Old Testament’s fore-shadowing of Christ’s death and its New Testament fulfillment. The skillful artisan, whoever he was that fashioned this masterpiece of glass depicted the marvelous unity of God’s plan for man’s salvation.
Many years before Christ came on his mission to earth, various events were recorded, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, which portrayed His sacrifice on the cross—a foreshadowing of better things to come! For, now, as we read the Gospels, we quickly and clearly see that all of the scriptures focus on the one central theme—the death of the Lamb of God for the sins of the world! How can anyone miss it?
Just as the Israelites looked to the brazen serpent lifted up on a pole in order to escape death, so we must look to the Cross of Calvary for the answer to the sin problem! And He is our only hope of eternal life!
Praise the Lord, it is no longer a shadow—it is the real thing! He was lifted up on a cross to die for us. Let us lift Him up before a lost, hell-bound world.
